This silver replica is of the original bronze coin of Ascalon (Ashkelon) which was struck in 153 C.E. Ascalon is the city that issued the greatest number of coins in the Land of Israel during the Roman period.
The obverse side of the coin shows the head of the Roman emperor Antoninus Pius and his name and title in Greek. The reverse side shows the Ascalonian goddess Derketo holding a scepter in her left hand and a dove is resting on the palm of her right hand. Derketo is standing on a triton, a sea monster with a human head and a fish tail. The inscription in greek reads "Ascalon year 256" (=153 C.E.).
