The crops signify labor, and the sword symbolizes protection. The word Palmach forms an acronym for Plugot Maḥatz, or "Strike Companies" in English, and the Palmach unit was the elite fighting force of the Haganah which later became the Israel Defense Forces when the State of Israel was established. Men and women alike fought in the Palmach, and inthe years after the State's independence, these people contributed greatly to the defense of the country, as well as to its development and formulation of the country's security, politics, economy, society and education.
