As a painter and a sculptor (and one of Israel's most famous modern artists), David Gerstein seeks to expand the limits of two-dimensional paintings into three-dimensional sculptures. His easily recognizable artistic colorful syntax has found its place in private homes and collections, as well as public spaces around the world. His works have been given by Israel's Foreign Ministry to heads of state around the world.

Born and Bred in Israel, Trained in Paris, London and New York

Born in Jerusalem and trained at Bezalel Academy, David Gerstein went on to study in Paris, New York and London before returning to Jerusalem, where he is currently based. Gerstein has developed an instantly recognizable style that can be found all over the world, in public spaces and private collections. His creations are colorful and confident, but also deceptively simple; beneath the lighthearted expressiveness seems to lie subtler meaning. Judaica Webstore offers a line of Gerstein painting-sculpture hybrids that are an excellent size for displaying in the home.

Gerstein Judaica

Available Gerstein works include his painted menorahs. Wrought in cut metal and painted in colors so bright that they make one think simultaneously of childhood and automotive finishes, Gerstein's menorahs come in a variety of designs, including butterflies, bird motifs, and a dove with olive branch. The candleholders in each of these designs is removable so it can be easily washed and stored, leaving the sculpture to adorn your home all year long. Gerstein has also created several hamsa sculptures that bear messages like "Good Tidings", "Peace upon Israel", and "Mazal Tov", all in Hebrew, of course. There is also a fascinating interpretation of Jacob's ladder, where a sleeping Jacob serves as a base for a ladder covered in brightly-colored, dancing angels.

The Everyday Rendered Remarkable

Also available are a number of sculptures concerning everyday subjects, like Gerstein's runners, free standing men and women runners painted in a brightly colored futurist manner suggesting strength and speed. Cyclists are another subject that greatly interest Gerstein. We have cyclists engaged in competition, rendered similarly to the runners, as well as more lyrical pieces: a bicycling father and daughter meeting a dove, and a woman bicycling amidst a rabble of butterflies.

Check out Gerstein's birds, his LOVE sculpture, his cypress trees and his bouquets. And don't forget about his fruit bowls, where he's submitted his colored cut metal to the practical duty of holding an arrangement of oranges, bananas and apples! The fruit bowls are available in two motifs: camels and brush strokes.
