This amazing work is the accompanying monumental publication to the exhibition opening for the first time to the public January 2013 at the Israel Museum in Jerusalem, "Herod  the Great: The King's Final Journey." It is the first exhibition entirely dedicated to Herod the Great, Israel’s greatest builder, as well as one of the most controversial figures in Jewish history. It seeks to illuminate Herod's story (74 BCE-4BCE), his reign and his role in the history of the region through a display of the archeological remains of the architecture he created, and the art and artifacts that surrounded his royal life.

The publication includes contributions by leading scholars from Israel and abroad, and the historical chapters shed light on the period, on Herods's relationships with the Roman rulers, on the problems within his family, and on the attitudes towards Herod in scholarship. The archeological chapters are devoted to the uniqueness of Herodian architecture, with its decorative and architectural styles. The publication incorporates throughout rare drawings and photographs of objects presented in the exhibition, a large part of which are presented here for the first time.
